LRMECS is one of two IPNS chopper spectrometers utilizing cold-to-epithermal neutrons for investigating the dynamic properties of materials. It has continuous detector coverage from 3 to 118 degrees and a wide range of incident energies from 6 to 600 meV, making it an efficient way of measuring S(Q,w) over a wide range of energy and momentum transfers. It is used to investigate the properties of a large range of technologically important materials; recent subjects include the dynamics of amorphous alloys, phonon densities-of-state in ceramic oxides, hydrogen diffusion in porous media, magnetic fluctuations in strongly correlated electron systems and crystal field and spin-orbit excitations in f-electron systems.
